Integration to new Belpaire building Brussels by Tatjana Gerhard - 'VERSUNKENE GÄRTEN'

Tatjana's latest work, VERSUNKENE GÄRTEN, can be witnessed in a new sustainable Bepaire building in Brussels' North district.

Although Gerhard is a painter, this is the first time the artist has created an in-situ piece with this art integration. This art integration for the ZIN project in the WTC complex in Brussels’ North District came at the invitation of curator Piet Coessens, for which Gerhard designed curtains. The back reveals abstract residual shapes from the front, where visible threads create an intriguing interplay of lines and forms. The thread with which a shape is sewn serves as a drawing and is just as important as the shapes themselves

The title of the work, VERSUNKENE GÄRTEN (2024), reveals the hidden beauty in the unfathomable depths of the ocean. Shapes disappear into folds, evoking the idea of “sunken.” These forms seem to originate from a plant world, yet remain enigmatic and abstract. On one side, recognizable silhouettes of plants and flowers emerge, as if slowly revealing themselves from the depths.

The curtains divide the space, improve acoustics, and make the environment more intimate and pleasant with a warm, soft appearance thanks to the chosen wool material. The back reveals abstract residual shapes from the front, where visible threads create an intriguing play of lines and forms. The thread used to sew a shape serves as a drawing and is just as important as the forms themselves. The thread connects the pieces and symbolizes connections, while the restaurant serves as a meeting place for new encounters. Njørd Sew For Life, an initiative that promotes the economic emancipation and integration of female asylum seekers in Brussels, has executed the sewing work with great dedication. Njørd SewforLife is a project that aims to contribute to the economic emancipation and integration of female asylum seekers in Brussels.

This work was commissioned by Zin in Noord, a subsidiary of Befimmo and the Flemish governement.
