Oscar Hugal
Biography
Hilbert is inspired by the legendary computer scientist Alan Turing and the early coding and decoding machines. The user is challenged to look for a specific combination of the switches to turn on the bulb. The artist is interested in the idea of turning on a lamp into an unnecessary complex gesture. The visual simplicity of the design is underscored by its elaborate title, a twist on how one should describe the lamp when filing it for a patent application. The artist perceived the lamp as an „apparatus“ to determine its aesthetic and used parts usually associated with machines. On the inside there is a manual with
hieroglyphic symbols, turning the lamp into a riddle.
