Nelleke Cloosterman BE, b. 1996
Biography
In my paintings I combine and distort everyday elements such as plants, animals and bubbles in a way that looks convincing, yet is not possible in reality. By doing so, I create a universe where it’s possible to find meaning that escapes rational logic or natural laws. My working method involves incorporating computer-generated images to translate my thoughts, which become a vehicle as well as a surface for my paintings. The act of painting as a final step leaves room for thought, surprises and fragility. As such, my compositions form a play between flatness and three-dimensionality, with gradients as a frequent motif. These gradients suggest the compression of time, which contributes to the idea that the painting is not a snapshot but an ongoing landscape where the inhabitants of my painting tell a story.
